The best Reading Comprehension Technique for multiple choice tests...

The most effective Reading Comprehension technique for multiple choice tests is to eliminate wrong answers.

Before we can begin to eliminate answers, though, we need to first make sure that we understood the question.

Misreading, or even misunderstanding what the question actually asks, reduces your chance for success drastically.

Misunderstood questions will destroy or ruin any reading comprehension technique no matter how good it is.

There’s no need for it.

So... read very carefully.

Ok?!

Now that we are sure that we know what the question is asking, let's continue.

The first thing you should do when dealing with the questions from a reading comprehension text is to get rid of at least two wrong answer choices.

Eliminate choices that are obviously wrong.

What are the obviously wrong choices?

For starters, look for an answer that is not mentioned in the text.

In fact, I've always had my students write nm (not mentioned) next to the answer choice that isn't mentioned in the text. I want to see ‘nm’ written in their books. That way, I know they are using the right technique for getting the correct answer.

Eliminating wrong answers is vital... to getting the right answer!

Is there ALWAYS an answer choice that isn't mentioned in the text? No, not always, but I'd say around 85-90 percent of the time there is. Eliminate even one answer choice, you will raise a guessing score from 25% to 33%. ‘Not mentioned’ is usually the easiest answer choice to eliminate, so look for them first.

Multiple choice questions - Part 7

1. Sam _______to change a light bulb when he _______ and _______.

2. Had you told me that this was going to happen, I _________it.

3. Before the interview, you have to send a letter of application and your résumé to the company.

4. They have just found the couple and their car _______ were swept away during the heavy storm last week.

5. You are not allowed to take photographs here.

6. When my father was young, he _______ get up early to do the gardening.

7. Nobody knows why she left so suddenly without saying a word, _______?

8. Do you know the woman _______ over there?

9. The classroom _______ when the teacher arrived .

10. I have to announce that the manager cannot attend our party today, ____________is a pity.

Câu 1 Chọn A vì thường khi có mệnh đề when trong một câu thì mệnh đề chính thường chia quá khứ tiếp diễn, mệnh đề when với quá khứ đơn.
Câu 2 Chọn A vì đây là câu điều kiện loại III. Cần lưu ý cấu trúc Had + S + V3/ed tương đương với If + S + had + V3/ed

Wish clauses

Có 3 dạng câu mong ước:
1. Mong ước không thật ở hiện tại:
Khẳng định:
S + wish(es) + S + V2/-ed + O
(to be: were / weren’t)
Phủ định:
S + wish(es) + S + didn’t + V

2. Mong ước không thật ở quá khứ:
Khẳng định:
S + wish(es) + S + had + V3/-ed
Phủ định:
S + wish(es) + S + hadn’t + V3/-ed

3. Mong ước không thật trong tương lai:
Khẳng định:
S+ wish(es) + S + would + V
Phủ định:
S + wish(es) + S + wouldn’t + V

Examples:

1. I wish I were on the beach now.
2. She wishes she could speak French.
3. My parents didn’t understand me.
– I wish my parents had understood me.
4. I don’t have a computer.
– I wish I had a computer.
5. What a pity! She won’t come with us tomorrow.
– We wish she would come with us tomorrow.

Multiple choice questions - Part 6

1. You can _______ the new words in the dictionary.

2. She went to the bookshop ___________.

3. The teacher told his students _______ laughing.

4. Paul was _______ disappointed with his examination results that he didn't smile all week.

5. The bomb went _______ with aloud bang which could be heard all over the town.

6. Mary asked me _______

7. Miss White sang very _______ at my birthday party last night.

8. "I have passed my driving test."

9. Pick out the word that has the stress differently from that of the rest.

10. He -----------in London at the moment.

Câu 1 Chọn A vì look up có nghĩa là tra (từ)
Câu 2 Chọn D vì theo sau so as to là một động từ nguyên mẫu. So as to có nghĩa là "để".
Câu 3 Chọn B vì đây là câu mệnh lệnh khẳng định định, cần phải sử dụng to + V
Câu 5 Chọn C vì go off có nghĩa là nổ.

John: I left my wallet at home. Could you lend me some money? I promise Ill return it tomorrow!

Mary: No need to promise. I believe that you will because I trust in you!

7. This mosque _______ for over twenty years.

8. He used to _______five years ago.

9. We have lived in this city _______ 1999.

10. The students _______ to smoke.

Multiple choice questions - Part 4

1. London is the city in ___________I was born.

2. The equipment in our office needs___________.

3. I ___________ television a lot but I don't any more.

4. _________ the cold weather, the match will go ahead.

5. My daughter / spend / two hours / study / mathematics / every day.

6. Helen asked me___________the film called “ Star Wars”.

7. If I had had a car, I___________you.

8. “Don’t play video games all the time!” he said.

9. “Where are you going ?’’ he asked her.

10. “They will build a new school in our town.”

Câu 1 Chọn B vì đây chỉ nơi chốn, thường thì chúng ta dùng where thay thế nhưng do phía trước có in nên phải dùng whichin which = where.
Câu 2 Chọn B vì chủ từ trong câu này là the equipment chỉ vật nên phải dùng bị động, mà bị động trong cấu trúc với need có 2 dạng: need + to be V3 hoặc need + V-ing.
Câu 3 Chọn C. Nhờ vào cụm từ any more có nghĩa là không còn nữa nên ta có thể suy đoán mệnh đề phía trước diễn tả một sự việc đã từng xảy ra trong quá khứ nhưng hiện tại không còn nữa, do đó chỉ có đáp án used to watch: đã từng xem là phù hợp.
Câu 4 Chọn A. Đầu tiên chúng ta sẽ loại 2 trường hợp C và D vì theo sau chúng phải là mệnh đề mà the cold weather ở đây là cụm danh từ. Chúng ta loại tiếp B vì phải là In spite of mới đúng, ở đây chỉ có In spite nên không chọn. Chúng ta cần lưu ý despite = In spite of nghĩa là mặc dù.
Câu 7 Chọn B. Đây là câu điều kiện loại 3 vì bên mệnh đề If có had had, vậy mênh đề chính phải là would have + V3.

1. Cách phát âm ED:

a. Đối với những từ có âm tận cùng là: /θ/ /t/, /f/, /k/, /s/, /t∫/, /∫/, /p/ thì khi thêm ED vào, ED sẽ được phát âm là /t/

Ví dụ: stopped, knocked, laughed...

b. Đối với những từ có âm tận cùng là: /t/ và /d/ thì khi thêm ED vào, ED sẽ được phát âm là /id/.

Ví dụ: wanted, needed, decided...

2. Cách phát âm S hoặc ES:

a. S hoặc ES sau khi thêm vào những từ tận cùng bằng âm /s/, /z/, /t∫/, /dz/, /∫/ thì được phát âm là /iz/

b. S hoặc ES khi thêm vào những từ tận cùng bằng âm /f/, /k/, /p/, /t/, /θ/ thì được phát âm là /s/

c. Ngoại trừ những trường hợp đã được liệt kê ở a và b thì khi thêm S hoặc ES vào sẽ được phát âm là /z/

3. Nhận biết âm câm:

g. Âm H câm: Âm H là một âm câm khi đứng sau âm W.

Ví dụ: what [wɔt], when [wen], where [weə]

h. Âm K câm: Âm K là một âm câm khi đứng trước âm N ở đầu các từ.

Ví dụ: knife [naif], knee [ni:], knowledge ['nɔlidʒ]

i. Âm L câm: Âm L là một âm câm khi đứng trước các âm D, F, M, K.

Ví dụ: calm [ka:m], half [ha:f], talk [tɔ:k]

j. Âm N câm: Âm N là một âm câm nếu đứng ở cuối từ và trước đó là một âm M.

Ví dụ: autumn ['ɔ:təm], hymn [him]

k. Âm P câm: Âm P là một âm câm khi đứng trong các tiền tố "psych" and "pneu".

Ví dụ: psychiatrist [sai'kaiətrist], pneumonia [nju:'mouniə]

l. Âm S câm: Âm S là một âm câm khi đứng trước âm L.

Ví dụ: guess [ges], guidance ['gaidəns], guest [gest]

o. Âm W câm: Âm W là âm câm nếu đứng đầu tiên của một từ và liền sau đó là âm R.

Ví dụ: write [rait], wrong [rɔη]

p. Một số từ bắt đầu bằng âm H câm.

Ví dụ: hour ['auə], honest ['ɔnist], honor ['ɔnə]

4. Đặt dấu trọng âm:

a. Từ một âm tiết: Những từ có một âm tiết đều có trọng âm trừ những từ ngữ pháp (grammatical words) như: in, on, at, to, but, so...

Ví dụ: 'speech, 'day, 'school, 'learn, 'love...

Ví dụ: be'hind, pro'long, un'wise, pre'pare, re'do...

Ví dụ: e'conomy, 'industry, in'telligent, 'specialise, ge'ography...

Ví dụ: engi'neer, volun'teer, employ'ee, absen'tee...

Ví dụ: re'vision, me'chanics, 'logic...

Multiple choice questions - Part 3

1. I remember ________ you about this before.

2. Mary always takes good care ________ her children.

3. Pick out the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently from that of the others.

4. There is no point in persuading him to take part in the game.

5. The bus was so full that we couldn’t get on.

6. Choose the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently from that of the rest.

7. Choose the word which is stressed differently from the rest.

8. We should participate in the movements ________ to conserve the natural environment.

9. The goods were never delivered ________ the promise we had received.

10. ________ you work harder, you won’t be admitted to that university.

Câu 1 Chọn C vì theo sau remember là to + V hoặc V-ing nhưng do hành động đã xảy ra rồi nên dùng V-ing.
Câu 2 Chọn C vì take care of nghĩa là chăm sóc
Câu 3 Chọn B vì tận cùng là âm vô thanh, 3 đáp án còn lại đều là hữu thanh.
Câu 4 Chọn A vì nó đồng nghĩa với câu gợi ý ở trên. Cấu trúc "There is no point..." dịch là "Không có kết quả gì...".
Câu B được rút gọn từ: which are organized thành organized.
Câu 9 Chọn D. Đầu tiên chúng ta loại A và B vì theo sau chúng phải là mệnh đề, mà the promise we had received là cụm danh từ. Chúng ta loại tiếp C vì nó không phù hợp nghĩa.
Câu 10 Chọn C vì đây là câu điều kiện, dựa vào nghĩa chúng ta chọn unless. Unlessnếu... không...

What ways to improve your reading skill?

Make a habit of reading regularly. Read as many English books, newspapers and magazines as you can get your hands on.

Reading should be fun, so make sure the texts you choose are not too too difficult for you. If the book or article you are reading is a chore, then find something easier. Try reading graded books written especially for ESL learners. I've written a guide on how to choose a book here.

Find an author you like and read all their books. By doing this you will get used to the style of a particular author and the typical vocabulary and grammar they use. As you read more of his/her books you will find it easier and easier.

If you have a local library find out if they stock English books or if they have bilingual editions of English classics. Or ask them to stock English translations of books you are already familiar with.

Try reading things more than once. Read something and then read it again a few weeks/months later. You should find your understanding has improved.

Try to discuss a book you've enjoyed with other people. You can even discuss books with me on the forum, or there are lots of online book clubs and you can even write reviews on book selling sites.

Don't try to read "the classics". Save them for later, start with contemporary short stories. And don't forget, there are loads of excellent comics out there too. I actually started learning German by reading Winnie the Pooh!

- Don't try to understand every word. Try to understand the overall meaning of a sentence or passage.

- Don't translate - only use a dictionary if a word keeps appearing in a text and you still don't understand it.

- Don't just read a book and then forget about it - try to analyse it. You can use this reading log to help you.

- Use the English Magazine to find some interesting articles, poems and jokes to read. If there's a word you don't understand double click it with your mouse and the definition will pop up. There are no more excuses.

- Check out my recommended books.

- Try some Speed Reading tips to increase your reading speed.

- Every Monday I run a reading session on iVisit. There are no more excuses.

How to write better?

If it takes you twice as long to write something in English as it does in your own language, then try these tips.

Before you start

Ask yourself "Why am I writing?" By thinking about the purpose of your text (perhaps you want to explain something, or ask something etc) you can choose the most appropriate vocabulary and level of formality.

Who are you writing to? Who is your reader, and what is their level of knowledge or English? Choose your language carefully and avoid words and expressions that are too technical or complicated.

Plan before you write. Prepare for writing by making a plan, and looking up all the words you need before you start writing.

A plan helps you keep a clear focus and helps you avoid repetition. Just jot down the points you want to make and order them into logical paragraphs. Remember that paragraphs shouldn't be too long. In fact, in certain types of writing, such as emails, your paragraphs can be one sentence long.

It's quicker to look up all the words you need before you write so you don't interrupt your "flow" of writing.

What to write

Say why you are writing in the first sentence. Use phrases such as "I am writing to enquire about…" so that your reader understands why you are writing. If you're replying to someone, you can write "Thank you for your email."

Use standard greetings and endings. Most letters begin with "Dear Mr X" or "Dear Ms X" and should end "Yours sincerely" (or in American English, "Sincerely yours"). If you know your reader quite well, you can be less formal with "Dear (first name)" and end "Best wishes" or "Best regards". If you absolutely have to write "Dear Sir" end with "Yours faithfully" rather than "Yours sincerely".

In emails you can start with the first name "Jane", or precede it with "Hi". If you are writing to a number of people, you can leave out the greeting. To end an email you can write "Best wishes", "Kind regards", "Thanks" or in British English "Cheers".

Use a closing expression in letters such as "Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance." In emails you can write, for example, "Many thanks for your help."

In letters, write the date out in full: 7 June 2006 or June 7, 2006. Avoid using abbreviated dates such as (7/6/2006) as although British speakers will understand this as 7 June, Americans will understand it to be July 6.
Extra tips

Use linking expressions to connect ideas and sentences. Words such as 'and', 'but', 'therefore', 'however', guide your reader through your ideas and make your writing easier to read. See also Linking Words in our Grammar section.

Be careful of referring words such as 'this' and 'it'. Make sure they refer to the right word or phrase.

Write as concisely as possible. Don't make your sentences too long, as they might become difficult to read. Avoid more than two ideas in any sentence.

Follow this word order principle to keep your sentences concise:

Subject – Verb – Object – Manner – Place – Time
(Who — Does—What— How— Where- When)

"Please could you send us the confirmation as quickly as possible."

"The Managing Director will visit the factory on Monday 10 July at 10 am."

Edit what you write. Use your computer spell-check, but check for grammatical mistakes yourself.

Edit out unnecessary words and phrases and avoid old-fashioned words such as "hereby", "herewith" and above-mentioned". Rather than writing "We hereby enclose a brochure", get to the point with "We are enclosing a brochure."

Read what you have written out aloud. Is it easy to read, or are the sentences too long? Have you put in enough punctuation?

Get someone else to check what you have written. Another person may see something that is unclear or a mistake.

Ask and answer

I create this page to ask and answer questions not related to posts presented in blog. You may ask any question provided that it is written by English. The questions may be various: study, puzzels, games... Besides, you can also answer the questions given by me or others. However, you should use English. Why? Because I think that it is useful for you and for me to improve our English.

I strongly believe that this topic will become more and more interesting in the future. Now, let's solve the first three questions.

Question 1: What comes twice in a moment, once in a minute and never in a hundred years?

Question 2: When I eat, I live but when I drink, I die. What am I?

Question 3: What goes up but never comes down?

5 Easy Steps to Write a Good Essay

To write a good essay on English literature, you need to do five things:

1) Understand the purpose of writing essays about literature.

2) Understand how to understand a work of literature.

3) Define "English."

4) Focus your essay.

5) Write your essay.

Let's take these in order.

1) Purpose. There are two closely related purposes of writing essays about literature. Instructors have you write them to make you examine literary works more closely. These works deserve your attention. They have moved people to tears and express the greatest thoughts and feelings of humanity in the best-known writing. As a student, the purpose of writing such an essay is to demonstrate that you understand this work fully and deeply.

2) Understanding. But how do you get that understanding? You get it by reviewing the work closely and repeatedly, and by looking at content, form, and function. You might think of the process as taking an engine apart and putting it back together. In the process, you should come to understand this particular "engine" (literary work) well. To do so, examine each choice made by the author until you can explain how it relates to the whole. Slow down, and take all elements of the work into account: sound, shape on the page, structure (chapter length, number of chapters, etc.), point of view, and so on. Assemble a list and move through it, always keeping the larger purposes of the essay in mind.

3) English. Don't take the term "English" for granted. It's been the subject of a lot of debate over the centuries, and you want to know how you're using it. Research the work's historical period and the author, and take what you learn to define your use of "English." Where is the author from? How did that location define itself during this period in relation to England—and how does it show up in the work?

4) Focus. As you write a literary essay, you argue for a specific interpretation of the work. The essential focus of your essay should be expressed in the thesis statement. Though there are many ways to phrase a thesis statement, you should always be able to translate it to a statement like this: "In this essay, I will prove ___ about this work." Your focus must relate to the purposes of literary essays. You should always be proving that you understand this work on a profound level, but also that you understand the larger meaning of this literary form, this period of English literature, writing, and humanity. Focusing well requires a lot of reflection.

5) Write the essay. This is where most people start. Don't. If you start here, you're likely to find the process hard and the result mediocre. Instead, do the other steps first. Come to the writing stage with a pile of notes and a clear sense of your focus regarding the work. Then start your essay with a clearly defined introduction that hooks your readers' interest and ends with a clearly stated thesis. Write three or more body paragraphs, each of which makes points that support your thesis, points that you illustrate with specific evidence from the work itself and your outside research. Provide transitions between each paragraph that guide your readers to a conclusion that sums up the essay, expresses what you learned by writing the essay, and, in the best possible world, rewards readers for reading your essay by teaching them something new. However, before you give the essay to them, review it. Make sure it completes its functions. Then proofread it until the work is error-free. You want every line of your essay to quietly declare, "You can trust me. I understand this work."
