The most effective Reading Comprehension technique for multiple choice tests is to eliminate wrong answers.
Before we can begin to eliminate answers, though, we need to first make sure that we understood the question.
Misreading, or even misunderstanding what the question actually asks, reduces your chance for success drastically.
Misunderstood questions will destroy or ruin any reading comprehension technique no matter how good it is.
There’s no need for it.
So... read very carefully.
Ok?!
Now that we are sure that we know what the question is asking, let's continue.
The first thing you should do when dealing with the questions from a reading comprehension text is to get rid of at least two wrong answer choices.
Eliminate choices that are obviously wrong.
What are the obviously wrong choices?
For starters, look for an answer that is not mentioned in the text.
In fact, I've always had my students write nm (not mentioned) next to the answer choice that isn't mentioned in the text. I want to see ‘nm’ written in their books. That way, I know they are using the right technique for getting the correct answer.
Eliminating wrong answers is vital... to getting the right answer!
Is there ALWAYS an answer choice that isn't mentioned in the text? No, not always, but I'd say around 85-90 percent of the time there is. Eliminate even one answer choice, you will raise a guessing score from 25% to 33%. ‘Not mentioned’ is usually the easiest answer choice to eliminate, so look for them first.

What ways to improve your reading skill?
Make a habit of reading regularly. Read as many English books, newspapers and magazines as you can get your hands on.
Reading should be fun, so make sure the texts you choose are not too too difficult for you. If the book or article you are reading is a chore, then find something easier. Try reading graded books written especially for ESL learners. I've written a guide on how to choose a book here.
Find an author you like and read all their books. By doing this you will get used to the style of a particular author and the typical vocabulary and grammar they use. As you read more of his/her books you will find it easier and easier.
If you have a local library find out if they stock English books or if they have bilingual editions of English classics. Or ask them to stock English translations of books you are already familiar with.
Try reading things more than once. Read something and then read it again a few weeks/months later. You should find your understanding has improved.
Try to discuss a book you've enjoyed with other people. You can even discuss books with me on the forum, or there are lots of online book clubs and you can even write reviews on book selling sites.
Don't try to read "the classics". Save them for later, start with contemporary short stories. And don't forget, there are loads of excellent comics out there too. I actually started learning German by reading Winnie the Pooh!
- Don't try to understand every word. Try to understand the overall meaning of a sentence or passage.
- Don't translate - only use a dictionary if a word keeps appearing in a text and you still don't understand it.
- Don't just read a book and then forget about it - try to analyse it. You can use this reading log to help you.
- Use the English Magazine to find some interesting articles, poems and jokes to read. If there's a word you don't understand double click it with your mouse and the definition will pop up. There are no more excuses.
- Check out my recommended books.
- Try some Speed Reading tips to increase your reading speed.
- Every Monday I run a reading session on iVisit. There are no more excuses.

How to improve your reading skill
Eighty-five percent of college work requires reading. How good are your reading skills? Here are seven steps to help you improve your reading skills:
1. Evaluate your reading habits to find out where you need improvement. Do you "say" the words you’re reading? Do strange words slow your speed and comprehension? Do you read every word? Do you re-read sentences? Do you vary your speed to suit the material?
2. Provide the best conditions for reading. Choose a place where you’ll have few interruptions, have good lighting, can sit in a good chair, and won’t be distracted by radio, TV or other noises. Hold the book about fifteen inches away (about the distance from your elbow to your wrist).
3. Use your eyes efficiently. If words are blurry, get your eyes checked by a professional. Don’t "say" what you read, and don’t re-read unnecessarily. Read phrases, not every single word.
4. Increase your vocabulary by keeping a dictionary handy, maintaining a list of new words, and knowing the origin of words.
5. Match your speed to the material you are reading. Know what and why you’re reading. Preview the material, especially when studying. Study reading requires closer, slower reading. For leisure reading you can go faster. Be sure you get the information in graphic aids and illustrations.
6. To improve your reading speed, practice for about 15 to 30 minutes each day, checking your rate in words-per-minute. Check your comprehension by summarizing what you read. Ideally, you want to read faster while maintaining your understanding. Therefore, use the same type of materials each time you practice to provide the consistency needed for meaningful practice.

10 Tips to Improve Reading Speed & Reading Comprehension
Read Early in the Day
Many people can double their reading speed and improve their concentration by reading the material that's important to them early in the day.
Prioritize Your Reading
Create three piles for your reading materials - important, moderately important, and least important. Then read the material in their order of importance. You'll improve your reading speed by doing this, and improve your reading comprehension by getting to the important material first, when your mind is clear and sharp.
Skim Material First for Main Ideas
Speed read for main ideas in nonfiction works like how-to books and educational texts. Scan the table of contents and first and last sentences of each paragraph. You'll improve your reading speed and comprehension if you understand a book's structure first. This will help you know which parts of the book to skim and which parts to read more carefully.
Form a Question
Improve your reading comprehension, reading speed, and concentration by turning headings and subheadings in textbooks and other nonfiction books into questions. Then scan the text for the answers. Your reading speed improves by doing this, and you become focused on your material.
Read in the Proper Environment
Prop your book or magazine using a bookstand - angling your reading material at 45 degrees improves your reading speed and reduces eyestrain. Avoid reading difficult or important material in bed, where your mind and body tend to relax. You'll stay alert if you sit at a desk instead.
Write a Course of Action on Correspondence
Improve your reading speed and avoid re-reading correspondence by jotting brief notes immediately after reading each piece of correspondence. Simply refer to your notes on each piece when you're reading to respond some time later.
Avoid Highlighting
Although readers believe that highlighting in yellow (or any other color, for that matter) improves their reading speed and comprehension, the reverse is actually true. Highlighting simply means they don't want to bother learning the material right now. The result: They end up reading the material twice, and possibly not understanding or remembering it either time!
Preview Before Reading
Look through material first to get a sense of what's interesting and important to you, and what you might be able to skip. Then focus on the sections that you need to understand and remember, and skim or skip the rest.
Use a Flexible Reading Speed
Some reading material must be read slowly and carefully: legal contracts, mathematical equations, and poetry are a few examples. Other reading material can be read at much faster speeds: newspapers, magazines, and novels. Adjust your reading speed to the type of reading material and your reading purpose.
Enroll in a Speed Reading Class
Avoid on-line speed reading courses and do-it-yourself speed reading software. They don't work. Speed reading is best learned in a speed reading class taught by a knowledgeable, experienced, speed reading expert. If you are in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, I'd love to see you in one of my public speed reading classes!
